Responsibilities of the Rich

Each and every one of us is responsible for our planet- No Exceptions.  Weighing one's own actions we decide the quality of life by what resources we use, take care of and sustain.

So- how are you helping?

What are you buying?  Is it a long term useful product? Useful to future generations?   What resources will it use up during its useful life? Is that resource usage unsustainable?   How will it be reused at the end of its useful life?

Buying a new car?  We are all running out of oil and the car you buy is going to be around for a long time, even after you sell it to get another new one.  By buying any new car you are causing that car to be made. If you buy a poor mileage vehicle you are directly responsible for using up precious oil and causing more global warming.  Buy the most efficient car you can.  Weight and horsepower both suck oil, even when the vehicle is a hybrid.   If you do once in a while need a larger vehicle, okay, but that should not be your daily driver.  Buy a Prius or Insight for that.  If you can't afford a second vehicle, who can?  All this buys us just a little more time to figure out what are sustainable vehicles, before the oil runs out and we all turn involuntarily local.

Creating a building or house? Building wisely is your responsibility. Our building on this planet use 78% of all the energy used.  Is it LEED certifiable? Why not- you can afford the best and the best is what's good for the planet.   What size is it?  Houses that are too big take too much time to clean, and often are not humanscale- not comforting to our human psyche.  They also waste more materials both in their construction and in the energy to heat and cool them.

What are you investing in?  Is it a company or group who are making useful goods?   Profit as the sole criteria of what gets done is not good enough.   Many ways of making money are detrimental to the society as a whole.  Make sure your investments support endeavors that Make Earth Richer defined by the resources we need to live.

Investing in the poor. Universally, humans turn really nasty when we can't feed our families.  We turn on our neighbors, whether those neighbors are other people or wilderness areas, doing whatever we can to eat.   This means war and habitat losses.  We all lose if we let people suffer in poverty, without sufficient resources.  We must educate all to be able to live quality lives while being responsible for the resources.  For we all directly suffer resource losses whenever anyone is left uneducated as to how to help themselves and others.

Investing in your own psychological well being.   When you are an old person are you going to be able to say to yourself that I helped the world.  There is nothing more important than that for being happy.  For those that believe in God isn't that what God is asking of you too?  Do the right thing- Make Earth Richer
